Diego is the leader of the Shadows in the Old Camp and Thorus's right hand, involved in the admission of every newcomer; his closest confidants are Fingers, Whistler and Sly. Once a thief from Khorinis framed into the colony by his former fence Gerbrandt, he met Gorn, Lester and Milten in prison before being thrown through the Barrier, and the four have been inseparable ever since. At the ore exchange he saves the hero from Bullit's beating, offers him a place in the camp, and later trains the hero's strength and dexterity with bow and crossbow. He sets the Shadow trial of trust (fetching Ian's supply list from the Old Mine) and stands at the hero's side in the Troll Canyon against the troll guarding one of the five focus stones. When the Old Mine collapses and Gomez has the Fire Mages cut down, Diego breaks with the camp, warns his friends, and calls them to the old rendezvous.
