Thorus is the leader of the guard of the Old Camp and, after Gomez, the second-most powerful man in the colony - a survivor of the original prison uprising who rose to command the castle's guardsmen after the takeover. He stands at the gate to the castle as gatekeeper to Gomez; only fellow guardsmen walk past him freely, while 1000 ore will buy a newcomer a timed blind eye. Before admitting a Shadow candidate to Gomez he demands a trial of his own: drive the untouchable New Camp fence Mordrag out of the camp without killing him, and never speak of it - the water mages for whom Mordrag couriers would retaliate. He trains accepted guardsmen in strength, dexterity and the two-handed blade; his creed to every new recruit runs simply - we stand together, we protect the barons and the ore, we keep the camp alive.
