Lester is a novice of the Brotherhood of the Sleeper whose faith runs along practical rather than fanatical lines - two years inside the Barrier have taught him to believe whatever it takes to get out of it. He ended up in the Colony after a city-watch arrest that turned fatal (two militia dead, self-defence in his version) and fell in with the Sleeper's cult because the gurus were the only ones teaching psi skills worth learning. He is one of the first people the hero meets in the Swamp Camp and immediately becomes an ally: he saves the newcomer from the faux-pas of addressing Baal Namib uninvited, feeds him the staged dialogue that restores Namib's interest, and later walks him through the camp pointing out the forge, temple, teachers and alchemy. In Chapter 2 he turns up at the Mountain Fortress on his own errand - a deed of title to the Valley of Mines - and helps the hero retrieve the Focus stone in exchange for the hero retrieving the deed.
