Sly is one of the influential Shadows of the outer ring in the Old Camp and a confidant of Diego, whose vote newcomers need if they want admission as Shadow. His standing task for any capable newcomer is to find Nek, the missing guardsman of the arena district whom Sly suspects of having defected to the New Camp. When the hero reports Nek's death, Sly asks pointedly for the protective amulet Nek used to wear - producing it cleanly earns his voice at Diego's ear, while keeping it quiet does not.
