Scatty is one of the most influential Shadows of the Old Camp, a confidant of Diego and the man who runs the arena - matching fighters, taking bets and training the champions himself. Mercenary-vs-guard duels are the colony's most-bet spectacle under his direction, and his vote weighs heavily in the admission of new Shadows. The hero impresses him deeply by beating Kirgo and then Kharim; after that he speaks of little else to Diego. He trains aspirants in one-handed swordsmanship for a fee, and holds Fletcher's sizeable betting debts over his head like a sword of his own.
