Ur-Shak - Son of Spirit - is a shaman of the orcs of Khorinis and the outcast witness who first tells the hero the truth about the Sleeper. His mentor Hosh-Pak spotted the gift for magic early and took him into the circle of shamans; the falling-out came later, over Hosh-Pak's plan to worship the Krushak, the demon the orcs had once called and then sealed beneath the mountain. Ur-Shak refused and was driven into exile. A spell among the men followed - he spent part of it as a slave in the Free Mine before escaping and leaving his friend Tarrok behind in the shafts. The hero finds him under attack in a ruined castle near the orc lands, defending himself against his former brothers; after the fight Ur-Shak explains the shamans' old calling of the Sleeper, the curse that bound them as undead, and the orc sign of peace - the Ulu-Mulu - that alone lets a human cross into the Orc City without being torn apart. He hands the hero a talisman against fire-waran breath and later turns up near the bridge into the orc city, watching for the Sleeper's awakening and waiting on his own Ulu-Mulu so he can go home. After the Sleeper is banished and the Barrier falls, his mentor is dead by the hero's hand; Ur-Shak takes Hosh-Pak's place as an orc leader on Khorinis, and honour is the only thing that keeps him from killing the man who had once been his friend.
