Baloro is a mercenary of the New Camp assigned to guard the cauldron at the Free Mine, where he whiles away his shifts pulling a confidence trick on every newcomer he can talk to. He promises a legendary weapon "that beats every enemy" in exchange for errand-boy groceries - five apples, two bottles of rice liquor, five beers, three loaves of bread, two cheese wheels, two bunches of grapes - collects the haul, then laughs the delivery boy off and keeps the food for his mates. The hero falls for it too; walking out is the quiet option, but taking a swing at him ends the joke faster. Baloro dies in the cauldron when Gomez's guards storm the mine.
