Bengar

Bengar is a farmer who runs his own homestead on the Pasture Plateau before the pass to the Valley of Mines – though only as a tenant, since the land belongs to the landowner Onar. He lives primarily from hunting, logging, farming, and raising sheep, and must also employ all the day laborers that Onar has no use for and sends his way. Although he considers Onar a greedy scoundrel who will get them all hanged, he has no choice: only Onar's mercenaries occasionally check on things, while the militia only comes to collect. The militia soldiers Rick and Rumbold demand tribute every week, and the paladins at the pass don't lift a finger. Since the fall of the Barrier, monsters pour daily from the Valley of Mines onto the plateau, which grew so dire that his shepherd Malak fled to the mountains with all the workers. Only after the hero recruited the mercenary Wolf for permanent protection did the situation stabilize. Bengar also harasses the shepherd Balthasar from Sekob's farm, denying him access to the Pasture Plateau – he openly admits it's pure spite, because he simply can't stand Balthasar.
