The Easy Way to the Militia
Lares suggests that Martin, the paladin provisioner at the Harbour District, could help the hero join the Militia without becoming a citizen first. Martin has a problem: every night when he goes to Kardif's pub, someone tampers with his supply crates. He needs the hero to guard the crates overnight and catch the thief. At 23:00, Rangar appears at the crates. After confronting him, the hero reports to Martin the next day and receives a letter of recommendation. Showing this letter to Lord Andre at the Barracks results in immediate admission to the Militia. This is a shortcut alternative to the regular path of becoming a citizen (see Joining the Militia).

400 XP (300 from catching Rangar, 100 from Martin). Letter of recommendation for immediate Militia admission.
Walkthrough
2. Speak to Martin. He asks you to guard his crates overnight while he drinks at Kardif's pub.
3. Wait at the supply crates until 23:00. Rangar shows up and starts stealing.
4. Confront Rangar (300 XP).
5. Report to Martin the next day (100 XP). He gives you a letter of recommendation.
6. Bring the letter to Lord Andre at the Barracks. He admits you to the Militia immediately.
