Snaf is the cook of the outer ring in the Old Camp, hands out his traveller's stew free to any newcomer and is universally well-liked for it - good food in the camp is a currency of its own. His signature is meat-bug ragout: one helping of meat-bug flesh from the derelict huts at the castle wall, hellfire mushrooms from the plateau outside the south gate, simmered into something that tastes much better than it looks. He once sent the guardsman Nek to collect the mushrooms; Nek never came back, and Snaf assumes he defected to the New Camp. The hero brings the ingredients in his place and from then on is welcome to three portions a day.
