Guy

Guy is a digger of the Old Camp whose hut sits not far from the one the hero takes on arrival, and who knows more about the three camps of the colony than most of his fellow diggers. He readily explains the advantages of each camp - the protection-money arrangement of the Old Camp, the lawless trade under the water mages of the New Camp, the generosity of the Brotherhood in the swamp camp - and points newcomers at the free hut with the little porch just above. His favourite topic is outside-world goods: bread, cheese, ham and above all proper wine, not the cheap rice liquor from the New Camp, all of which the guards' ore-exchange brings in monthly and the other camps can barely afford.
