Ur-Shak
Ur-Shak is an orc shaman – a "Son of Spirit" – living on the island of Khorinis. His talent for magic was discovered by the high shaman Hosh-Pak, who became his mentor and admitted him to the council of shamans after long years of study. Later, Ur-Shak fell from grace when he opposed the worship of the Krushak – the being the humans call the Sleeper – which he recognized as an evil demon. He was forced into exile and spent time as a slave in the Free Mine, where he learned the human language. He eventually escaped, though his friend Tarrok was recaptured. In the old castle of the Valley of Mines, the hero saved Ur-Shak from attacking orcs, and in gratitude the shaman revealed the true history of the Sleeper: how five shamans built an underground temple, summoned the demon, and were cursed for it – becoming both dead and alive. He told the hero about the Ulu-Mulu, the orc standard of friendship whose bearer the orcs would not attack, and directed the hero to his friend Tarrok in the mine to obtain one. He also marked the orc territory on the map of the hero. After the fall of the Barrier, Ur-Shak remained in the Valley of Mines and sought to regain his standing among the orcs. Hosh-Pak finally agreed to meet with him to discuss reversing his banishment – but the hero killed Hosh-Pak on orders from Oric before the meeting could take place. Consumed by grief and rage, Ur-Shak took over the position of his fallen mentor as a leader of the orcs on Khorinis. His hatred for humans was rekindled, though the honor of the shamans prevented him from killing the hero – once his friend. He warned the hero to leave the valley and that at their next meeting, they would be enemies.
