Gritta

Gritta is a talkative widow and niece of the carpenter Thorben, living in her uncle's house in the lower city of Khorinis. She once led a prosperous life with her husband, a merchant ship captain – attending high society parties, receiving precious fabrics from the mainland and rare spices from the southern islands. His ship, which he named "Gritta" out of love for her, sank and he perished at sea. Since then she has lived in modest circumstances, yet continues to run up debts with nearly every merchant in the city. The craftsman Matteo in particular is waiting for payment for clothes she dismisses as defective. Anyone sent to collect debts from her must first endure a lengthy tale about her late husband and better times. She also causes trouble for her uncle Thorben – he had to borrow 200 gold pieces from the moneylender to cover her debts, after which she stole another 100 gold coins from his chest.
