Grimes

Grimes is a veteran digger who has been mining ore for over ten years – a survivor of multiple disasters. He first worked in the Abandoned Mine until its support beams collapsed, then in the Old Mine until a water breach flooded it. He survived both catastrophes and later joined the expedition of Commander Garond in the Valley of Mines, staying true to his craft as a miner. During the time of the Barrier, he gave newcomers in the Old Camp blunt advice: forget about escaping, the Barrier stops everyone. He had seen the faces of those who tried. Yet he also recognized potential – maybe the hero would rise to the top, though even then the Barrier would hold. In the Valley of Mines, Grimes works at the third mining site under the paladin Marcos. When the orc attacks intensified, Marcos decided to transport the extracted ore to the castle by crossing the frozen river and approaching from the west rather than taking the direct route. Grimes refuses to leave the valley despite the orcs – he won't let them stop him from mining, having survived worse. After the orc invasion of Khorinis, the surviving humans were transported to the mainland on orc galleys and given a choice between slavery or serving as orc mercenaries – what became of Grimes is unknown.
