Gerold

Gerold is a paladin stationed at the castle in the Valley of Mines, serving as the warden of the dungeon. He claims that Innos himself granted him the ability of perpetual wakefulness, allowing him to guard the prisoners without ever needing to sleep. Among his charges are several convicts and the mercenary Gorn – a tough customer who required four men to subdue. Gerold refuses entry to the dungeon for everyone without exception, not even Milten gets through. However, he can be persuaded to pass a message to Gorn – in exchange for a proper meal. The constant ration cuts by Garond have left him starving, and he threatens to bite the commander in his fat backside if he doesn't get something decent to eat soon. The hero secretly supplies him with food at the mage temple when no one is watching – sausages, cheese, ham, roasted meat, or soup – and receives gold in return. For the message delivery, Gerold demands a sausage, a loaf of bread, honey, and a bottle of wine. Once Garond orders the release of Gorn after the hero pays the 1,000 gold ransom, Gerold hands over the dungeon key without question.
