Brutus

Brutus is a militia soldier and torturer serving with the expedition of Commander Garond at the castle in the Valley of Mines. He trains soldiers to build their strength and "takes care" of the prisoners – his true art, as he puts it, is making people talk, and everyone talks eventually. The paladins won't let him near Gorn, however. He and his companion Den kept a chest of valuables confiscated from tortured prisoners. When the situation in the valley grew desperate, Den fled with the chest toward the pass but was killed by snappers along the way. Brutus offers to train the hero in exchange for recovering 200 gold pieces from the stolen chest – or any 200 gold from anywhere else. He has a crippling fear of meatbugs and abandoned his torture chamber when the creatures moved in, refusing to return until the hero clears them out. As a reward for the extermination, he grudgingly pays a sum of gold. Later, Brutus fell under the influence of the Seekers and was cursed with the dark gaze, becoming a danger to himself and everyone around him.
