Shadowrunner
Shadowrunners are ancient, large predators considered nearly extinct that mostly dwell in remote locations. On Khorinis they are larger than a human, with thick black-grey fur and a distinctive horn on the center of their forehead – a valuable trophy that fetches high prices at market. They prefer to live as solitary hunters in forests and caves, sleeping during the day and hunting at night. They prey on everything – sheep, rats, humans, and even orcs end up on their menu, as evidenced by the piles of bones and skulls found in their lairs. Occasionally they share a cave with others of their kind or even goblins. On Khorinis they are found in the forests of the valley, in caves, and in Jharkendar. In the Valley of Mines, even shadowrunner skeletons have been sighted. Their mainland relatives are notably smaller and lighter in color, forming small groups. In Varant, a subspecies has developed – the desert runner, living in pack formations with orange fur. The orcs of Khorinis attach great ritual significance to the horn – it is used in the creation of the Ulu-Mulu, a standard symbolizing friendship. The mercenary Buster buys shadowrunner horns for profitable resale, and the hunters Gaan, Grom, and Talbin teach how to extract the horn from the skull. The pelt is crafted into clothing, and the coat of arms of Kings Rhobar I and Rhobar II depicts a shadowrunner as a symbol of royal power.
